When you select a repository it is fetched via the GitHub API and indexed into a private Mixedbread store, which chunks and embeds it for retrieval. You can also add your own key to use your own Mixedbread store.

Every file the agent reads and every file the viewer shows is fetched in real time via the GitHub API. For each query, toast-1 picks the tool for each step which can be semantic search over the Mixedbread store, grep for keyword search, file reads, or agentic search through a multi-round retrieval loop that decides each round's searches from what the last one returned.
